How to not text your ex when the urge hits

The urge to text an ex usually peaks for a few minutes and then drops, especially late at night. You do not have to win the whole breakup tonight, only the next ten minutes. Here is a plan for those ten minutes, and what helps over the following weeks.

The next 10 minutes

  1. Name it. Say or write: "I want to text them because ____." Lonely, bored, jealous, a song came on, you saw a photo. Naming the reason takes some of the pressure off.
  2. Write the text anyway, somewhere it cannot send. Type the whole message. Do not hold back. The urge is to say it; saying it somewhere safe often satisfies it.
  3. Set a timer for 10 minutes. Promise yourself you can decide after the timer. Most of the time the urge is gone by then.
  4. Move. Stand up, drink water, step outside, take a shower. Changing rooms changes the moment.
  5. Text someone else. A friend, a sibling, anyone who is on your side. Tell them you almost texted your ex.

12 things that help over the next weeks

  1. Archive the thread. Mute or archive the conversation so it is not at the top of your messages.
  2. Mute, do not stalk. Mute their stories and posts. Checking their profile restarts the urge every time.
  3. Write down why you stopped talking. Keep the list somewhere you will see it at night.
  4. Plan for the hardest hour. If it is 11 p.m., have something ready for 11 p.m.: a show, a call, a walk, bed.
  5. Tell a friend your rule. "If I say I'm texting them, talk me out of it."
  6. Expect the anniversaries. Birthdays, holidays and the day you met are predictable. Make plans for them in advance.
  7. Keep an unsent thread. Every time you want to text them, write it there instead. Reread it after a month and notice what changed.
  8. Go easy on alcohol while it is fresh. Many regretted texts happen after a few drinks.
  9. Count days, then stop counting. A streak helps early on; later, let it go.
  10. Fill the gap they left. The good-morning text, the person you told about your day. Give that slot to someone or something else.
  11. Get the practical stuff done in one message. If you share a lease, a pet or belongings, handle it in one clear, short message, then go back to no contact.
  12. Forgive the slip. If you text them, it is not a failure of the whole plan. Start again from today.

Why writing the text helps

Most of the pull is not about the other person reading it; it is about getting the words out. When you write the message in full and press send, the loop closes, even if it goes nowhere. That is the idea behind writing unsent texts.
