No contact journal prompts, from day 1 to day 90

No contact is easy to start and hard to keep, mostly because the urge to text does not go away on schedule. A journal gives it somewhere to go. Here are 40 prompts, grouped by the stage you are in, plus a simple daily check-in you can copy.

How to use these

Pick one prompt a day, or the one that matches the urge you have right now. Write for ten minutes without editing. You are not writing to be read. When the urge to text comes back, write the text you want to send instead, in full, then close the notebook.

Days 1 to 7: the first week

  1. What happened, in plain words, as if telling a stranger?
  2. What do I want to say to them right now? Write the whole message.
  3. What am I afraid will happen if I do not reach out?
  4. What am I hoping they will say back? Is that likely?
  5. What time of day is hardest, and what can I do at that hour instead?
  6. Who can I talk to this week who is not them?
  7. What did I stop doing during the relationship that I could start again?
  8. Why did I choose no contact? Write the reasons so I can reread them on a bad night.
  9. What does my body feel like today? Where is the tension?
  10. One thing I did today that was only for me.

Days 8 to 30: the hard middle

  1. What triggered the urge today: a song, a place, a photo, a date?
  2. Write the text I almost sent. Then write why I did not.
  3. What am I romanticizing? What would a friend remind me of?
  4. What did I tolerate that I will not tolerate again?
  5. What part of the story do I keep replaying, and what am I trying to change in it?
  6. If they reached out tomorrow, what would I want to do? What would be good for me?
  7. What do I miss: them, or who I was with them, or having someone?
  8. A boundary I kept this week, and how it felt.
  9. Write a letter to them that I will never send. Say everything.
  10. Write the reply I wish I would get. Notice how it feels to read it.
  11. What am I proud of since day 1?
  12. What plans did I make for us that I can make for myself?
  13. Where do I check on them (profiles, mutual friends)? What would it take to stop?
  14. What did this relationship teach me about what I need?
  15. The kindest thing I can say to myself tonight.

Days 31 to 90: when you stop counting

  1. How is today different from day 1?
  2. What does a good day look like now, and how many did I have this week?
  3. What do I still want to say to them? Has it changed since the first week?
  4. What was mine to own in how it ended?
  5. What was theirs to own, that I no longer need to carry?
  6. What do I want my next relationship to feel like, day to day?
  7. A memory with them I can keep without wanting them back.
  8. What friendships did I let slip, and which one can I rebuild this month?
  9. Something I would not have tried a year ago that I want to try now.
  10. If I met the person I was on day 1, what would I tell them?
  11. What still hurts, and what would help it heal a little more?
  12. What does closure mean to me, and can I give it to myself?
  13. Write a goodbye letter, the last one. Keep it or burn it.
  14. What will I do the next time the urge to text comes back?
  15. What am I looking forward to that has nothing to do with them?

A two-minute daily check-in

Day: __ Urge to reach out today (0 to 10): __ What set it off: What I wrote instead: One thing that went well: Tomorrow I will:

Paper, notes app, or something built for it

Any notebook works. What people find hard about a notes app is that writing to your ex in a blank document does not scratch the itch; the urge is to text. That is the gap Unsaid fills: it looks and types like a messenger, you write to them in a thread and press send, and nothing ever leaves your phone.
